Overview of Oil-impregnated Bearings

Oil-impregnated bearings (often called sintered bearings or Oilite bearings) are self-lubricating, porous metal components manufactured via powder metallurgy. They contain large amounts of lubricant within their porous structure, which releases oil under pressure or heat to create a self-lubricating surface, particularly in automotive and domestic appliances.

Product advantages

Self-Lubrication The self-lubricating property is the hallmark feature of sintered oil-impregnated bearings. The porous structure acts as a reservoir, continuously releasing lubricant to reduce friction and wear. This not only enhances performance but also reduces the need for manual lubrication, saving time and resources.

Longevity and Durability These bearings are designed to withstand harsh operating conditions, including high temperatures and heavy loads. The consistent lubrication reduces wear and tear, extending the bearing’s lifespan and ensuring long-term reliability.

Low Maintenance Because they do not require frequent re-lubrication, sintered oil-impregnated bearings are an excellent choice for hard-to-access machinery or equipment that operates continuously. This reduces downtime and maintenance costs.

Cost-Effectiveness The extended service life and reduced maintenance requirements translate into significant cost savings over time. These bearings are often more affordable than other options requiring frequent attention.

Versatility Sintered oil-impregnated bearings are suitable for a wide range of applications, including electric motors, automotive components, household appliances, and industrial machinery. Their adaptability makes them a versatile solution for various industries.

Application

Automotive Parts

Internal components throughout a vehicle contain powder metallurgy parts. From gears and bushings inside the engine and transmission to sliding door bushings and everything in between, PM is a common part of any vehicle.

Home Appliances

Commonly found in cooling fan motors in a variety of home appliances, but found in many home appliances wherever a bearing or bushing is needed. The oil in the bearing creates a product that rotates very quietly which is important for products used around the home.

Office Equipment

Printers, copies, scanners and more will often incorporate an oil-impregnated bearing. Along with the reduced noise level, the self-lubricating aspect of the bearings ensures a long life with little to no maintenance.

Material

Bronze

Sintered bronze oil-impregnated bearings have long service life, low operating noise, corrosion resistance, and are the most widely used.

Iron

Sintered iron oil impregnated bearings have the advantages of low price, excellent self-lubricating performance, fatigue resistance, and high strength. However, they have poor corrosion resistance and the lubrication effect is not as good as bronze.

Iron & Copper

Sintered bushings have good corrosion resistance and are cheaper than bronze sintered bronze bushings.

Manufacturing process

Oil-impregnated bearings are manufactured in the following manner.
Raw materials → Mixing → Molding → Sintering → Sizing → (machining) → Vacuum impregnation → Inspection → Packing → Shipping
The raw powder is selected and mixed in a mixer. Next, it is compressed from above and below in a press molding machine to create a green compact. The green compact is then fired in a sintering furnace to become a sintered body. After the sizing process, it is impregnated with lubricating oil in a vacuum oil immersion furnace (vacuum oil immersion) and is then completed.

FAQ

Q: What are oil-impregnated bearings?

A: Oil-impregnated bearings are porous metal bearings that are pre-filled with lubricating oil. During operation, the oil is released to provide continuous lubrication.

Q: How do oil-impregnated bearings work?

A: The porous structure stores oil internally. As the bearing heats up during operation, oil is drawn to the surface, reducing friction and wear without external lubrication.

Q: What are the key advantages of these bearings?

A: They offer self-lubrication, low maintenance, quiet operation, and cost efficiency, especially in applications where regular lubrication is not practical.

Q: What materials are commonly used?

A: Typical materials include sintered bronze, iron-based alloys, and composite materials, selected based on load, speed, and environmental requirements.

Q: In which applications are they commonly used?

A: They are widely used in electric motors, household appliances, automotive components, office equipment, and small machinery.

Q: Do these bearings require maintenance?

A: Under normal operating conditions, they are maintenance-free. However, performance depends on proper application design and operating environment.

Q: What are the limitations compared to rolling bearings?

A: They generally support lower loads and speeds compared to ball or roller bearings, and are not suitable for high-impact or extreme conditions.

Q: How long is the service life?

A: Service life depends on load, speed, temperature, and environment, but they are designed for long-term operation without additional lubrication.

Q: Can they operate in high-temperature environments?

A: Yes, but the operating temperature must remain within the limits of the base material and lubricant. High temperatures may accelerate oil evaporation.

Q: Are custom sizes and designs available?

A: Yes, oil-impregnated bearings can be customized in terms of dimensions, material composition, and oil type based on application requirements.

Q: How do they perform in terms of noise?

A: They provide low-noise operation due to the absence of rolling elements, making them suitable for applications where quiet performance is required.

Q: Can different lubricants be used?

A: Yes, different types of oil can be impregnated depending on operating conditions such as temperature range, load, and speed.

Q: How are these bearings manufactured?

A: They are produced using powder metallurgy, where metal powder is compacted and sintered to create a Controlled porous structure.

Q: What factors should be considered when selecting one?

A: Key factors include load capacity, operating speed, temperature, shaft compatibility, and environmental conditions such as dust or moisture.

Q: What affects the cost of oil-impregnated bearings?

A: Cost depends on material type, size, production volume, customization requirements, and any additional processing or quality standards.
